Do I need to charge GST on Australian invoices?
GST is Australia's 10% federal goods and services tax. You must charge it if your business is GST-registered with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Registration is compulsory once your GST turnover crosses A$75,000 over any rolling 12-month period (A$150,000 for not-for-profits). Below that, registration is optional, you can stay un-registered and skip GST entirely.
Once registered, you must include GST on every taxable supply, issue tax invoices, and report through your quarterly Business Activity Statement (BAS).
In Invoicara, choose GST as the tax type and set the rate to 10%. If you're not GST-registered, leave tax off, there's no requirement to charge it.
Tax invoice vs regular invoice, what's the difference?
If you're GST-registered and your customer wants to claim a GST input tax credit, you must issue a tax invoice. A tax invoice has stricter requirements than a regular invoice: it must clearly say "Tax Invoice" and include the GST amount or rate.
For invoices under A$82.50 (including GST), a regular invoice is fine. Above that, a tax invoice is required if your customer is also GST-registered and wants to reclaim the GST.
What an Australian tax invoice must include
The ATO requires tax invoices to include: the words "Tax Invoice" prominently displayed; your business name and ABN (Australian Business Number); your customer's name and ABN if the sale is over A$1,000; the date of the invoice; a brief description of the items sold with quantity and price; the GST amount payable (or a statement that the total includes GST); and the total amount payable.
Invoicara's form supplies every field you need. Mention "Tax Invoice" in the notes section or invoice number prefix to make the document type clear.
Sole traders, ABN, and the small-business threshold
As a sole trader you operate under your own name (or a registered business name) and your Australian Business Number (ABN). An ABN is free to apply for from the ABR and is technically optional, but without one, your customers are required to withhold 47% of any payment to you, so practically every Australian freelancer has one.
Add your ABN to the Tax ID field. If you trade through a Pty Ltd company, include the company name and ACN (Australian Company Number) instead.

Invoicing in Australia — FAQ
Is this invoice generator free for Australian users?
Yes, 100% free, no sign-up, no watermark, unlimited tax invoices and regular invoices.
Does it work with AUD and 10% GST?
Yes, pick AUD from the currency dropdown for the A$ symbol and Australian number formatting, then set the tax to GST at 10%.
Can I add my ABN to the invoice?
Yes, pop your ABN into the Tax ID field and it appears on the downloaded PDF beneath your business address.
Sole trader vs Pty Ltd, does it make a difference here?
Not in the tool itself. Sole traders use their own name + ABN; Pty Ltd companies use the company name + ACN. Both populate the same fields.
What if I'm under the A$75,000 GST threshold?
If you're under the small-supplier threshold, you don't need to register for GST or charge it. Simply skip the tax field, your invoice shows the subtotal as the total.
Tax invoice or regular invoice, which should I send?
If you're GST-registered and the sale is over A$82.50 (including GST), send a tax invoice. Otherwise a regular invoice is fine. Both look professional in Invoicara, add "Tax Invoice" to the notes or invoice number for clarity.
