Do I need to charge VAT on a UAE invoice?
The UAE introduced VAT at a standard rate of 5% on 1 January 2018. You must charge VAT if your business is VAT-registered with the Federal Tax Authority (FTA). Registration is mandatory once your taxable turnover exceeds AED 375,000 over the preceding 12 months. Voluntary registration is available from AED 187,500.
Once registered, you must charge VAT on every taxable supply, issue compliant tax invoices, and submit periodic VAT returns to the FTA, usually quarterly.
In Invoicara, choose VAT as the tax type and set the rate to 5%. If you're not VAT-registered (below the voluntary threshold), leave tax off, there's no requirement to charge it.
UAE tax invoice requirements
The FTA requires a tax invoice to include: the words "Tax Invoice" clearly visible; the supplier's name, address, and TRN (Tax Registration Number); the customer's name and address (and TRN if they're VAT-registered); a sequential invoice number; the date of issue (and date of supply if different); a description of the goods or services with quantity; the unit price excluding VAT; the rate of VAT applied per line; the total amount excluding VAT; the total VAT amount; and the total amount including VAT.
For B2C sales and invoices under AED 10,000, a simplified tax invoice is acceptable, fewer required fields. Invoicara's layout works for both.
TRN, FTA, and VAT registration
Your Tax Registration Number (TRN) is the 15-digit identifier issued by the FTA when you register for VAT. It's required on every tax invoice you issue. Without a TRN you can still send invoices, but they can't be tax invoices and you can't charge VAT or claim Input Tax recovery.
Add your TRN to the Tax ID field, it appears on the downloaded PDF beneath your business address.
Mainland, free zone, and freelancer permits
Whether you're a mainland LLC, a free-zone company, or hold a freelance permit, the invoice you send your client looks the same in Invoicara: fill in your business name, address, and TRN if registered. Designated zones have special VAT treatment in some cases, always check with your free-zone authority or a tax adviser if you're unsure.
Freelancers operating under a permit follow the same rules as any other VAT-eligible business: register if you cross the threshold, otherwise stay un-registered and don't charge VAT.

Invoicing in United Arab Emirates — FAQ
Is this invoice generator free for UAE users?
Yes, 100% free, no sign-up, no watermark, unlimited tax invoices and regular invoices.
Does it work with AED and 5% VAT?
Yes, pick AED from the currency dropdown and set the tax to VAT at 5%. The PDF shows the AED currency code (rather than the د.إ symbol) so it renders cleanly in every PDF viewer.
Can I add my TRN to the invoice?
Yes, pop your 15-digit Tax Registration Number into the Tax ID field and it prints on the downloaded PDF beneath your business address.
Mainland vs free-zone, does it work for both?
Yes, the invoice fields are the same. Both mainland and free-zone businesses fill in their name, address, and TRN if VAT-registered.
What if I'm under the VAT registration threshold?
If you're below AED 187,500 in taxable turnover, you can't register voluntarily and don't need to charge VAT. Simply skip the tax field, your invoice shows the subtotal as the total.
Tax invoice vs simplified tax invoice, which do I send?
For B2B invoices over AED 10,000 you must issue a full tax invoice. For smaller amounts or B2C sales, a simplified tax invoice is acceptable. Invoicara's layout works for both, add "Tax Invoice" to the notes for clarity if you'd like.
